Cleaning and Disinfecting Safety Padding

With the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak, a lot of people wonder how easy it is to clean our safety padding.  The good news is that Gold Medal Safety Padding is easily cleaned and disinfected with common detergents and water-soluble chemicals.

If you need a disinfecting clean, a standard bleach water solution where the bleach is in a high enough concentration to disinfect the padding it fine.  Use standard unscented bleach like what you can find in your local store, which comes in a concentration of a 5 or 6% solution.  The CDC recommends mixing your standard, unscented bleach in an 1:48 bleach to water ratio (1/3 cup:1 gallon) for COVID-19.  Please keep in mind that other contagions may require a stronger solution, as much as 1:10 when using a common 5% bleach.  If you are dealing with any outbreak, be sure you know the proper ratio to use to disinfect the safety padding.  It will never hurt to check with your local medical professionals for how to disinfect for any new pathogen.

Following the CDC’s guidelines, ensure there are no cracks or breaks in the padding for germs to hide in.  Ideally any damage should be repaired before the padded safety room is used.  Clean the surface with mild, soapy water and rinse.  After rinsing, apply your disinfecting bleach water solution and let air dry.

Be sure to follow the directions for whatever chemicals you are using, including safety precautions and use of safety gear when using any chemicals (check the SDS of the chemical to know what to do).  Even common bleach can have significant negative health consequences if used improperly.

While our safety padding is generally non-reactive to water-based solutions, be sure to test any chemical you use in an inconspicuous location to ensure it does not damage the safety padding before applying it to larger surface areas.  Inspect your trial location after 24 hours to see if any discoloration occurs.
